Hi. I'm Matt. I'm some twenty-something. I have vague dreams of being a music journalist. Either that or a Rock Star. I haven't decided yet. I mainly just post random shit about stuff that I like or things that have happened to me in my not-so-thrilling day to day life. I'm kind of a nerd, but an awesome one.

I think I got a little bit angry about that. Still, the sentiment remains true. And he really is an incompetent cunt.

When you hear the word ‘prequel’, very rarely does it ever lead to a good film. The likes of The Scorpion King and Hannibal Rising being key examples of origin stories that didn’t really need to happen. And after the shit-stain that was X-Men Origins:…

I’ve not really been on this old website in quite a long time, but I’ve finally got around to setting up a ‘portfolio’ blog of sorts. Where I’ll post bits of writing what I’ve done on various platforms in the past, and maybe new things that don’t have anywhere else to go.

There’s not much on there at the moment but it’s a work in progress. But check it out. I’d like to see what people think about my writing and that.

Tell your friends etc etc

Tim Howard is sad because Ashley Cole’s hotel rooms have had more clean sheets than him this season.

As upsettingly true this is, it’s still pretty funny.

Happy New Year?

Emma actually got me the Cliff Richard calendar for this year and this very picture is currently adorning our wall. Amazing.

My year in lists.

A lot of people have said that this year hasn’t really been that great, musically. They probably have a point. I think I’d struggle to name many more than the top 10 for albums, definitely not for EPs, but alas. There are already a whole bunch of releases in 2013 I’m looking forward to. Frightened Rabbit, Joy Formidable, Jimmy Islip, Local Natives, Biffy Clyro, and that’s just in the first couple of months. Anyway, that’s next year. This is this year.

Top 10 Albums (In no particular order):

The Menzingers - On the Impossible Past
Apologies, I Have None - London
Metric - Synthetica
Cheap Girls - Giant Orange
Sam Russo - Storm
Franz Nicolay - Do The Struggle
The Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
Matt & Kim - Lightning
Japandroids - Celebration Rock
The Shins - Port of Morrow

Special Mentions to: Freelance Whales - Diluvia, Jake Bugg - S/T, Two Door Cinema Club - Beacon, Mixtapes - Even on the Worst Night

Top 10 EPs (In no particular order):

Frightened Rabbit - State Hospital
ONSIND - Mildred, Margie, Annie, Clarice
Pudge - EP (RIP)
Blink-182 - Dogs Eating Dogs
The Menzingers - On The Possible Past (Does an EP of acoustic demos from an album from the same year count? I think it does)
Gnarwolves - Cru
Lemuria - Varoom Allure/Cannonballs to Hurt
Great Cynics - In The Valley
Martha - S/T
Why? - Sod in the Seed

Top 10 Songs (in no particular order):

Frightened Rabbit - State Hospital
The Menzingers - Good Things
Apologies, I Have None - Long Gone
Matt & Kim - Let’s Go
The Gaslight Anthem - 45
Pudge - Over to John Anderson
Cheap Girls - Ruby
Franz Nicolay - Hearts of Boston
Sam Russo - Dry Shampoo
The Menzingers - The Obituaries (they’re allowed two because they are both amazing songs)

Top Shows (In no particular order):

Pudge @Rhubarb, Huddersfield
Blink-182 @ Manchester Apollo
Franz Nicolay @ Star and Garter, Manchester
Curtis Eller @ The Duck and Drake, Leeds
The Menzingers @ Moho (oh, sorry NQ) Live, Manchester
ManchFESTer 2 @ Kraak, Manchester
Apologies, I Have None @ The Parish, Huddersfield
Metric @ The Ritz, Manchester
Blink-182 @ MEN Arena, Manchester
Latterman @ Brudenell Social Club, Leeds

I suppose in hindsight it has been a pretty good year! I finally got to see Blink, twice. And they were brilliant both times. Curtis Eller in Leeds was an absolute delight. ManchFESTer was great, even if it was the most ridiculously hot venue I’ve ever been in. Apologies and Pudge right here in town were both excellent as well. Even if the crowds were rather, shall we say, meagre. Anyway, that was 2012, here’s hoping that 2013 is another good year!

So, in keeping with the ‘end of year lists’ junk that goes around at this time of year (oddly enough), here is my top artists of 2012. There probably aren’t many surprises here. Menzingers are obviously top because they are brilliant. Even if some people weren’t sold on their latest album, I thought it was brilliant and they’ve been on a fairly constant rotation all year. Frightened Rabbit and Blink are obviously going to be high up, and Apologies excellent debut puts them pretty high up. Sam Russo would probably be a bit higher if I got his record earlier than last week, but alas. Anyway, this is my top 30, because I know you were all intrigued.

It’s OK guys. I just saw a weather forecast for Saturday. We’re going to be fine.

Although it’s going to piss it down, apparently.

This fucking film is on TV at some point over Christmas. I’m definitely going to watch it at least once. Maybe more times. I’m excited.
